On the Death of a Cat

Who shall tell the lady's grief
When her Cat was past relief?
Who shall number the hot tears
Shed o'er her, beloved for years?
Who shall say the dark dismay
Which her dying caused that day?

Come, ye Muses, one and all,
Come obedient to my call;
Come and mourn with tuneful breath
Each one for a separate death;
And, while you in numbers sigh,
I will sing her elegy.

Of a noble race she came,
And Grimalkin was her name.
Young and old full many a mouse
Felt the prowess of her house;
Weak and strong full many a rat
Cowered beneath her crushing pat;
And the birds around the place
Shrank from her too close embrace.
But one night, left of her strength,
She laid down and died at length:
Lay a kitten by her side
In whose life the mother died.
Spare her line and lineage,
Guard her kitten's tender age,
And that kitten's name as wide

Shall be known as hers that died.

And whoever passes by
The poor grave where Puss doth lie,
Softly, softly let him tread,
Nor disturb her narrow bed.

- Christina Georgina Rossetti

Four Feet in Heaven

Your favorite chair is vacant now…
No eager purrs to greet me.
No softly padded paws to run
Ecstatically to meet me.

No coaxing rubs, no plaintive cry
Will say it’s time for feeding.
I’ve put away your bowl, and all
The things you won’t be needing;

But I will miss you little friend,
For I could never measure
The happiness you brought me,
The comfort and the pleasure.

And since God put you here to share
In earthly joy and sorrow;
I’m sure there’ll be a place for you
In Heaven’s bright tomorrow…

Beyond the Rainbow

As much as I loved the life we had

and all the times we played,

I was so very tired and knew

my time on earth would fade.

I saw a wondrous image then

of a place that's trouble-free

Where all of us can meet again

to spend eternity.

- Cate Guyan

Beyond the Rainbow

Padding to the Otherside

We had a wonderful life together…

I was called and I had to go. I could no longer stay.

I left and you know it was time…

For your love gave me strength to leave that day.

Please don’t cry, as I am now your Cat-watcher…

I am protective, always near and never far away.

Trust and know that I am a purring…

My belly is full and I get to play… play… play.

My soul-human… Please! Please! Never forget.

I am in your memories forever; our love will never stray.

We will always have our paws imprinted on each other’s heart…

…nose to nose and paw to paw…

… Timeless love created in our own very special way.

Love, hugs and Forever Paws!

Gone Home...

God once made his cat to sit by His side,

He made him with kindness, with virtue and pride.

This cat was so special, so loyal and fair,

That God in his wisdom, He knew He must share.

So for a short while

he came down from above,

and brought with Him happiness,

laughter and love.

But God missed His own cat,

life wasn't the same,

so one sunlit morning

He called out his name.

And now he has gone home

to sit on his knee,

but just for a short while

God shared him with me.

Lucky Cat

My eyes are getting heavy now,

My time has come to leave,

But one thing I must tell you

As you stay behind to grieve..

You always did your best for me,

Your love knew no end,

I really was a Lucky Cat to have you as my friend.

I see how much you miss me now,

Your days seem bleak and bare.

I know you too well, your heart is big

You still have love to share

So please don’t sit and cry for me,

We’ll meet around the bend

Til then another Lucky Cat

Is waiting for a friend.

Cat peacefully lying

Heavenly Nap

You lived your nine lives here with me
My loyal, loving friend,
Then God took you up to Paradise
To live life number ten.

I’ll bet you’re peacefully lying
Upon an angel’s lap.

Purring there, without a care
Having a heavenly nap.

I’ll miss you for a little while,
But our friendship will not end.
Time will pass, and then at last
You’ll be on my lap again.

- Ron Tranmer

Cat Poem

They will not go quietly,
The cats who’ve shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
Their spirit still survives.

Old habits still make us think
We hear a meow at the door.
Or step back when we drop
A tasty morsel on the floor.

Our feet still go around the place
The food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
We miss them terribly.

And although time may bring new friends
And a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
Belongs to them. . . and always will.

- Linda Barnes

I Only Wanted You

They say memories are golden
Well maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
You never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
No one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I’d walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

I Walk With You

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
“It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here.”

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you, that I’m not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said “it’s me.”

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It’s possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, “I never went away.”

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew …
In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over and I smile and watch you yawning
And say “goodnight, God bless, I’ll see you in the morning.”

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I’ll rush across to greet you and we’ll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out . then come home to be with me.

Lucky Cat

Rainbow Bridge

And when you and your special friend meet,

you take him in your arms and embrace.

Your face is kissed again

and again and again,

and you look once more

into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

Never again to be separated.

What Cats Would Say to God

And God asked the feline spirit

Are you ready to come home?

Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul

And, as a cat, you know I am most able

To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.

Soon, replied the whiskered angel

But I must come slowly

For my human friends are troubled

For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don’t they understand? asked God

That you’ll never leave them?

That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?

That nothing is created or destroyed?

It just is….forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,

Replied the glorious cat

For I will whisper into their hearts

That I am always with them

I just am….forever and ever and ever.

Her Journey’s Just Begun

Don’t think of her as gone away –
her journey’s just begun,
life holds so many facets –
this earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of her as living
In the hearts of those she touched
For nothing loved is ever lost –
And she was loved so much.

- Ellen Brenneman

Please Don’t Cry Because I’m Gone…

Smile because you had the opportunity to give me

What I never had before; love, and a home,

And a family to call my own.

I know that you miss me, but I want

You to understand, I’m happy here,

My pain is gone

And I’m able to play again.

Please don’t be afraid

To love somebody new.

You made me feel special!

I would want them to feel special too.

We will meet again one day.

Until then, keep in mind,

The happy moments that we shared.

Until the sad ones are far behind.

-Meow

R.I.P My Furry Friend

You came into my life one day

So happy and so smart

My constant companion

Loyal and loving from the start

You brought such love and laughter

Into our happy home

With you sitting by my side

I never felt alone

Now you have left me

It’s almost more than I can bear

The house seems so empty

Without you standing there

You no longer wait to greet me

As I walk through the door

You’re not there to make me smile

To make me laugh anymore

Just for now I need time to mourn

My broken heart to mend

Though some might say

‘its just a Cat”

I know I’ve lost a faithful friend

You were a great companion

So playful, loving and true

My heart will always wear

The paw prints left by you

Cat Memorial Poems

You Were Here

I dread that day,

One year from now,

That first marking of the time,

That your body was no longer with us;

Though we will never forget you,

Your tangible memory fades,

The feel of your fur, your head, your back, your weight against us,

The smell and sounds of you when,

You were here.

- Jenine Stanley

My Cat

There is an empty space upon my lap

Where you always used to sit

I know that I am going to cry,

More than a little bit.

You’re no longer sitting by the door.

And waiting to come in.

Your no more nesting on my nap

With claws as sharp as a pin,

I will miss you purring in my ear,

Now that your no longer here,

And no more little presents,

Being dropped at my feet,

You looking at me and saying

Look Mommy something to eat.

It’s very sad we had to part.

My little furry friend,

But this is not the end,

One day we will meet again,

Over at rainbows end.

Weep Not for Me: In Memory of a Beloved Cat

Weep not for me though I am gone
Into that gentle night
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul’s sweet flight
I am at peace, my soul’s at rest
There is no need for tears.
For with your love I was so blessed
For all those many years.
There is no pain, I suffer not,
The fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts
In your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath
Remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death,
But celebrate my life

- Constance Jenkins

Just A Cat

Just a cat some folks may say, just get another one.
They just don’t understand, the bond can’t be undone.
I watched that “Just a cat” be born, in fact it was in my lap
Her mama had joined me in my chair, I thought to take a nap!

In an instant my life had changed, when I saw that tiny face
When my little Beast was born, and began to run the place.
I nursed her when she was not well,
I took the worse and loved the best, that little ball of fuzz.

Solace in These Loss of Cat Poems

Through the good times and the bad,

she was always there

Then when we finally settled down,

and lived without a care.
A few years went by, one day at a time,

we were a lot happy
You never think about the day,

or maybe you forgot.

But in the end it happens, good things just don’t last.
That tiny little life is snuffed out. The years go by too fast.
I watched her as she was born and loved her every day
I heard her heart beat that last time before she went away

So to some of you she might have been “Just a cat”
But to me she was my little Beast and nothing can change that.

- TMMorehouse

A Poem For Wally

Oh my sweet kitty, I love you still,
There’s a place in my heart, you always will fill.
I still feel your fur, and find it around,
Bringing back memories of the kitty I found.
I miss you, I miss you, what more can I say,
I wish you were here for just one more day

- Heather

Kitty Heaven

How beautiful heaven must be,

Filled with cat and kitten souls, you see.

No truer friend, no truer heart,

No wonder it hurts so to be apart.

Our angels in fur are just on loan,

And heaven has spoken and called them home.

But in your heart they will always be,

For the love that you shared will never leave.
